NBA Finals Edition: 6 NBA Stars Who Love Soccer

The NBA finals are upon us.  In a rematch of last year’s matchup, the Cleveland Cavaliers trail the Golden State Warriors 1-2.

While you get ready for another epic Curry v. LeBron battle, we take a look at a few basketball stars who have been making moves in the soccer world.

6. Dirk Nowitzki

The German has used his soccer skills for the greater good: to raise funds for the Dirk Nowitzki Foundation.

The foundation raises money for youth from underprivileged backgrounds and focuses its efforts in health and education projects around Germany.

5. Paul George

Paul George is obsessed with FIFA.  The wildly popular video game has been instrumental in a growing number of NBA players embracing the beautiful game.

4. Carmelo Anthony

Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks have been discussing the team’s future with a look towards a successful 2017 season.

Off the court, Carmelo is leading the charge to bring soccer back to Puerto Rico.  He recently became an owner in the North American Soccer League (NASL).  His team, Puerto Rico FC, will be making its debut this Fall.

3. LeBron James

LeBron’s business interests include a minority ownership stake in Liverpool FC.  The deal, entered into in 2011, was the first of its kind in that it brought together an athlete at the height of his career and a massive sports team in a non employer-employee capacity.

2. Kobe Bryant

Kobe’s love for soccer goes back to his childhood, having lived in Italy until age 14.  A confessed AC Milan and Barcelona fan, the Black Mamba will certainly be missed on the basketball court.

One thing is for sure: Kobe’s global appeal transcends basketball.  Here he is with none other than Leo Messi in an ad for Turkish Airlines.

1. Steve Nash

Like Carmelo and LeBron, the former NBA star has ventured into ownership.  First, with the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS and most recently with Mallorca in Spain.  A confessed Tottenham Spurs fan, Steve Nash’s love for soccer runs deep.
